Portsmouth, famous for its Harbour, is an Island on the alluvial plane that once formed part of a river valley that now is the Solent. To the north and overlooking it is the chalk ridge that forms the backbone of Portsdown Hill. A favourite spot for dog walkers, picnickers and those who just find the extensive views across to the Isle of wight to the south, and the South Downs to the north, an inspiration to the spirit. Its ridge is dotted with a string of forts known as Palmerston's Follies, built to protect Portsmouth with its naval importance, from attack from the north, along with four sea forts, during the Napoleonic wars. They now serve various purposes while Fort Nelson is now open to the public. More HERE. Click 'Refresh' if any images fail to load. |
