The Emsworth Design
Statement and the
Future Look of
Emsworth

David Jones.

The readers of The EMS are by definition interested in Emsworth. You are concerned about how the area develops and in many cases you have strong views.

Many of you can hear the sounds of the A27, rather louder than you would like, which is one of the gifts to Emsworth by our thoughtful planners. Could we have stopped the road altogether back in the early 80's when it was built? No. Did we ask for a quiet surface or for heavier grade sound barriers? I doubt it. Many of us were not here when it was at its planning stage. Would such proposals have made a difference? They might have and we would have a record to say that we had tried. Once mistakes are made they take years to correct, as we have already seen with the road.

Changes will continue and there are many projects yet to come in Emsworth. Governments pressure the local and not so local authorities into building more dwellings, leisure facilities, factories, offices and roads. People want to extend their homes or build a few houses in a large garden. We have to accept that Emsworth will continue to change, but we can have some influence if we act before the pressure arrives.

To present the collective views of Emsworth in the Emsworth Design Statement about those aspects that we feel most keen to retain unchanged, about those we can allow to change and, if changed, how they should fit into the existing structure, are all worth recording. You, the residents, must have some thoughts on all this and we would be pleased to have them. Havant Borough Council is interested in our efforts to produce a Design Statement, and will take notice of it as long as it represents the views of a large number of people and is well presented. If you haven't already got one, please collect one of the forms from the collection box in the Library and write your views on the present look of Emsworth and its future, or join together with any group to which you belong to contribute to its collective thoughts.

The emphasis in this project so far has been on publicising the project and its aims. Hopefully from October onwards, with the support of numerous residents we can concentrate on researching and developing the content of the Design Statement. We have no deadline for completing this phase, but we do intend to finish it by June so that editing and organising the format for printing can then be arranged. Our target is to go to print in October next year.
