All of us who are old enough remember the 'Great Storm' of 1987. People went to bed on the night of Thursday 15th October much the same as usual. The wind was blowing but it wasn't until about 2am that the full force of the storm began to be felt with winds up to 120 m.p.h. and the fiercest on record for 250 years. Nineteen people were killed that night as the winds swept the south of England creating havoc, tearing up swathes of well established trees, bringing down power and telephone lines, and causing structural damage to buildings. On the Friday 16th, people awoke to chaos. What had sounded bad was far worse in the light of day, quite a fine day belying the storms of the previous night as people took stock of what had happened. Below are some photograph taken that day as I walked down to Emsworth.
