| Wonderful sunny weather
greeted the riders on the annual Westbourne Sponsored
Cycle Ride held
on Sunday 15th
June 2003 by the British Heart Foundation, to raise much
needed money to fund research and provide facilities for
people with cardiac or respiratory problems. The ride was held on a 9 kilometre circuit around Westbourne, Southbourne, Hambrook and Woodmancote with riders of all ages taking part, ranging from 86 year old Bill Harmsworth, a long time riding member of Portsmouth Cyclists Touring Club, to young children riding the route with their parents. Over 60 riders took part, some completing up to four circuits. The first circuit was completed in as little as 25 minutes. The BHF hope to raise over £1500. The ride started at 10.00am from Chantry Farm, Foxbury Lane, Westbourne. A mountain bike prize was to be won by one of the sponsored riders. Awards were also given for the individual rider who collects the greatest amount of money and team awards. Members of the Solent Veteran Bicycle & Tricycle Club brought their beautiful old machines along, riding the course in the opposite direction to give everyone else a chance to see them. Starting at 10.45 they completed the course in around 50 minutes, including Michael Edwards on his penny farthing (and in his seventies). |
